Mercury Retrograde in Scorpio: What Lies Beneath the Surface

Share

October 24–November 13, 2026

There are things we say, things we mean, and things we never quite find the courage to speak aloud.

Scorpio is the zodiac sign that invites us to explore the space between them.

On October 24, Mercury begins its third and final retrograde of 2026, spending its entire backward journey in Scorpio before turning direct November 13. While Mercury retrograde has earned a reputation for technological mishaps and misunderstandings, this particular passage offers a more interesting invitation: to look beneath the surface.

The Messenger Meets the Scorpion

In astrology, Mercury governs communication, thought, and interpretation. Named for the Roman messenger god, Mercury carries our words, ideas, and sometimes our contradictions.

Scorpio is a fixed water sign, ruled by Mars traditionally and associated with Pluto in modern astrology. Its symbolism encompasses secrecy, intimacy, loyalty, power, and transformation.

And Scorpios have quite a reputation of their own.

Passionate, focused, driven, and distinctly no-nonsense, Scorpios don’t play. Ask one a question, and you may receive the unvarnished truth, along with a few brutal jokes at your expense. The famous line “You can’t handle the truth!” might have been written for a Scorpio. Filters aren’t necessarily their strong suit, nor are they particularly interested in acquiring one.

Yet beneath that sharp wit is often fierce loyalty, a wicked sense of humor, and a remarkable ability to compartmentalize. You might be a Scorpio’s closest friend and never meet half the other people in their world. They can be intensely private, with entire chapters of their lives you may never know.

Of course, not every Scorpio fits this description. But the archetype raises compelling questions:

When does honesty become brutality? And when does privacy become secrecy?

The Strange Art of Going Backward

Astronomically, Mercury never reverses direction. Retrograde is an apparent motion created by the changing positions of Earth and Mercury as they orbit the Sun.

Mercury begins this retrograde near 21° Scorpio and turns direct near 5° Scorpio on November 13 at 7:53 a.m. Pacific Time.

Its pre-shadow began October 4. After turning direct, Mercury crosses the same degrees again, completing its post-shadow November 29 in Pacific Time.

Three passages through the same stretch of sky: forward, backward, and forward again.

It’s a poetic invitation to reconsider what we think we know.

Have we ever delivered a truth so bluntly that the message was lost? Have we mistaken someone else’s discretion for dishonesty?

Truth, Secrets, and the Stories We Carry

Scorpio is associated with what remains hidden, but not everything hidden is sinister. Sometimes we conceal things because they’re precious, painful, or not yet understood.

There’s a difference between keeping a confidence and keeping a secret. Between healthy boundaries and walls nobody can penetrate.

Are we protecting something valuable, or afraid of vulnerability? Do we demand transparency from others while guarding our own private worlds?

And are we prepared to hear the same unvarnished truth we’re so willing to deliver?

Intuition isn’t suspicion. Not every silence conceals a secret, and not every uncomfortable feeling signals something wrong.

Sometimes we need better questions, not quicker conclusions.

A Moment in the Heart of the Sun

On November 4, Mercury reaches its inferior conjunction with the Sun near 12° Scorpio, known in astrology as a cazimi, traditionally associated with being “in the heart of the Sun.”

Astronomically, Mercury passes between Earth and the Sun. Symbolically, astrologers associate this meeting with concentrated clarity.

In Scorpio, the image is evocative: light reaching into places we rarely examine.

Perhaps clarity comes not as a dramatic revelation but as the realization that we’ve been asking the wrong question—or insisting on only one part of a larger truth.

Two Planets, One Turning Point

Venus is also retrograde, moving through Scorpio and Libra from October 3 to November 13. Associated with relationships and personal values, Venus turns direct the same day as Mercury.

Together, they invite us to reconsider what we feel, what we value, and what we say.

Are we communicating from love, loyalty, resentment, or fear? Are we telling someone the truth because they need to hear it, or because we need to say it?

Sometimes those are very different things.

The Wisdom of Looking Again

Mercury retrograde isn’t a reason to mistrust everything or expect disaster. But astrology can offer a language for reflection.

We can be honest without being cruel. Private without being secretive. Loyal without being possessive. Passionate without needing control.

Perhaps that is Mercury retrograde in Scorpio’s invitation: to examine what we say, what we conceal, and the motives behind both.

Because sometimes what needs transforming isn’t the situation itself.

It’s the story we’ve been telling ourselves about it.
