This Mercury retrograde is in Cancer. As a Cancer rising, even in shadow phase, I'm already feeling this transition. It is reminding me to look back at the last time Mercury was retrograde in Cancer, which was in the summer of 2020.

That was a challenging time—not just for me, but for the country. We were knee-deep in the middle of a pandemic and experiencing a great deal of political and social unrest. It was a profoundly unsettling period. I'd like to think I've done a lot of self-work since then. However, I still find myself feeling a bit challenged already, by this energy, and yet eager to pass through these lessons and move beyond the blocks in areas of my life that may still be slowing growth.

Mercury retrograde in Cancer invites us to become more conscious of how we connect, communicate, listen, react, and respond. Cancer teaches us that emotional safety matters. Mercury teaches us how we think, speak, learn, and share information.

Together, they encourage us to take a closer look at our relationships—not just with family, friends, and loved ones, but also with ourselves. How do we communicate with others? How do we wish to be communicated with? What stories do we tell ourselves when things don't go according to plan? And how do we respond when we feel misunderstood, criticized, vulnerable, or hurt?

During this pre-shadow phase, I encourage you to look for opportunities to learn. You may notice karmic lessons arriving very quickly. You may judge someone for doing something and then catch yourself doing the exact same thing shortly afterward. What a clear and immediate opportunity for self-growth!

Learn how you communicate with others. Learn how you communicate with yourself. Pay attention to the places where you become defensive, frustrated, offended, or emotionally triggered. Sometimes those moments aren't happening to punish us. Sometimes they're showing us something we haven't fully seen.

One of the most humbling lessons Mercury retrograde can offer is the realization that we occasionally judge someone else for something we do ourselves. It may not look exactly the same on the surface, but the underlying pattern is often there. We can become frustrated by someone else's behavior without realizing we're expressing that same energy in a different way.

The truth is that much of life is lived on autopilot. We develop habits, reactions, beliefs, communication styles, and emotional defenses. We run those programs so often that we stop noticing them. Then someone challenges us, disagrees with us, or reflects something back to us, and our first reaction is often to protect ourselves.

But what if there is a lesson hidden inside that discomfort?

What if the person who is frustrating you, is also holding up a mirror?

Mercury retrograde has a way of revealing blind spots. It can uncover areas where growth is needed, places where healing is possible, and patterns we've been repeating without realizing it. It invites us to slow down long enough to observe ourselves honestly.

As someone who studies astrology every day, I don't believe Mercury retrograde is something to fear. I think it's an invitation to pay attention. Looking back at the summer of 2020, I can see how much has changed in my own life. Some chapters have closed. Others are just beginning. This retrograde feels less like a warning and more like an opportunity to pause, reflect, and appreciate the journey.

When challenging moments arise over the coming weeks, see if you can pause before responding in the old way. Before becoming defensive. Before assuming the worst. Before reacting from an old wound.

Take a breath. Consider another perspective.

And then ask yourself a simple question:

What can I learn from this?

Because sometimes, just sometimes, the other person is right. And recognizing that may be the very thing that helps us heal, grow, and move forward.
