Mercury retrograde gets a bad reputation.
Lost emails. Delayed flights. Glitchy computers. Misunderstandings. We've all heard the stories, and sometimes they really do happen. But if that's all we see, we miss the real gift of Mercury retrograde.
Mercury rules communication, learning, travel, and the way we process information. When it appears to move backward across our sky, it's as if life gently asks us to slow down and take a second look.
The clue may be hiding in one simple prefix:
RE.
Mercury retrograde isn't usually the best time to race ahead. It's a wonderful time to...
- Reflect on where you've been.
- Review your plans before moving forward.
- Reconnect with old friends, ideas, or dreams.
- Revise that article, proposal, or creative project.
- Repair what has been neglected.
- Reorganize the spaces where life has become cluttered.
- Restore your energy with a little extra rest.
- Rediscover something you once loved.
- Reconsider a decision before committing.
- Release what no longer belongs in your life.
Notice how few of these words ask you to begin something entirely new. Instead, they invite you to deepen, refine, and strengthen what's already there.
Think about hiking a trail. Every now and then, you stop—not because you're lost, but because you've reached a beautiful overlook. You catch your breath, look back at how far you've come, adjust your backpack, and decide on the best path forward.
Mercury retrograde is a little like that.
It's less about going backward than about gaining perspective.
Of course, this doesn't mean you should put your life on hold. People sign contracts, launch businesses, travel, and make important decisions during every Mercury retrograde. Life doesn't stop, and neither should you.
It simply means it's wise to slow down enough to proofread the email one more time, double-check the meeting time, back up your computer, and ask one more question before assuming you understand.
Mercury retrograde isn't here to punish us.
It's here to remind us that wisdom often lives in the second draft, the second conversation, the second look.
Sometimes moving forward begins by taking one thoughtful step back.
So the next time Mercury turns retrograde, don't ask, "What will go wrong?"
Instead, ask yourself:
What in my life is ready for a little "RE"?
